Graphic organizers for choice novels. This resource is ideal for independent reading; however, it may also be suitable for whole-class novels. Use the graphic organizers as a booklet using the cover page or select only the worksheets you need.

⭐Response process:

  • These graphic organizers follow the response process: explore, connect with the text, and go beyond (generalize).
  • Analysis worksheets are also included; however, these are optional if your ESL learners do not have the required proficiency level to complete the tasks.

 

⭐The graphic organizers focus on the following skills/strategies:

  • Before reading activities (predicting, information about the novel, genre)
  • Information about the author (Author’s biography card)
  • Discussion questions (Students are required to record the questions they wish to discuss with their peers. – Use these when students are reading a whole-class novel or when several students are reading the same novel.)
  • Note-taking worksheets while reading (Two is provided, but print as many copies as your students need.)
  • Character portrait
  • Plot
  • Summary
  • Conflict situation and themes
  • Connect with the text worksheets
  • Memorable quotes
  • Narrative point of view
  • Figurative language (symbols, imagery, metaphors, hyperbole, similes, and personification)
  • Literary devices (allusion, epiphany, foreshadowing, flashback, irony, and other.)
  • Go beyond – lessons learned/drawing conclusions

 

⭐Assessment:

  • Final reinvestment task included with rubric (Letter to the author) – optional activity
  • Please note that the rubric has been designed for ESL learners; however, it might also be useful to assess reinvestment of understanding and writing skills in ELA classes.

  • Please note that this resource does not come in paperless option, but you can import the PPT file into Google Slides™ if you wish to use it in your Google Classroom™.
  • Be advised that this document is not editable, and it may not be posted on open (unsecured) online platforms.
  • Lesson plan detailing the steps of teaching novels is not included.
  • This document has been designed for Grade 8-11 ESL learners (intermediate, upper-intermediate, and advanced levels). However, it might also be appropriate for ESL/ELA students below or above these grade levels.
